How to Take the Best LinkedIn Profile Photo

Tips for taking professional profile photos using just your phone

Ready to upgrade your LinkedIn headshot without booking a studio? You’re one phone and a few simple tricks away from a photo that sparks connection, builds trust and helps people remember you.

The best part is you don’t need a pro photographer to look polished.

Whether you’re camera-shy or a seasoned selfie-pro, these tips will help you capture a shot that feels like “you” and makes people want to hit “Connect.”

After all, your profile picture is your first impression – let's make it count!

How to snap a pro-level profile photo (no photographer needed)

1. Give your lens a spa day

Smudges turn bright light into dull haze. Before you take a single photo, grab a soft cloth (or your shirt in a pinch) and gently wipe the camera lens to remove dirt and debris.

2. Switch to portrait mode

Most smartphones now come with a portrait mode that subtly blurs the background and keeps the focus on you, giving your photo a more polished look. No portrait mode? Find a clean, blank wall, step forward a few feet and let natural depth do the work.

3. Face the light

Lighting can make or break your photo. Always position yourself toward your light source. Natural light works best—try standing near a window or outside in the shade. Avoid backlighting and harsh overhead fixtures that cast unflattering shadows.

4. Frame for impact

A good headshot should frame you from the chest up, with your face centred and filling about 60% of the frame. Keep your shoulders in view and look directly into the lens—eye contact builds trust.

5. Dress the part

Your outfit should reflect the types of roles you want. A crisp, solid-colour top works in most settings. But if you’re targeting more traditional industries, lean into business casual or even formal wear. Skip busy patterns and logos that can be distracting.

6. Pick a tidy backdrop

Plain walls, brick façades, neutral office settings or simple greenery let you shine. Be sure to avoid cluttered rooms or messy desks, which can pull the focus away from you.

7. Smile naturally

You don’t need an Ace Ventura grin — hyper-expressive and overly-enthusiastic — just a warm, approachable smile. Imagine greeting a colleague over coffee to really nail the look.

Bonus tip: Enlist a friend

Two heads are better than one! Ask a friend or family member to snap a few shots while you focus on posture and expression. You’ll get more options and probably have more fun, too.

Quick profile photo checklist

✅ Lens cleaned
✅ Portrait mode (or clear background + depth)
✅ Facing a soft light source
✅ Chest-up, centred framing
✅ Natural, confident smile
✅ Neutral or tidy background
✅ Work-appropriate outfit

Your photo doesn’t need to be flawless. It just needs to look like you—professional, approachable and ready to connect with the world.
