Altis remains committed to Canada’s Net-Zero Challenge

We’re recycling, reducing single-use items, cutting back on energy consumption and more as we target net-zero emissions by 2050

We’re all about competing, especially for the ultimate prize: a cleaner, greener planet for us all to enjoy.

For the second year in a row, Altis is proud to announce that we’re on track as a committed participant in Canada’s Net-Zero Challenge, a national initiative that encourages businesses of all kinds — large and small, manufacturers and professional services firms alike — to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.

To fulfill our commitment, we’re doing our best to reduce our environmental impact, and we’re pleased as green punch to say, we’re making progress.

Now, you might be wondering, “Altis isn’t a manufacturing business, so what exactly are they reducing?”

Here’s a snapshot so far:

  • As an organization that offers hybrid and remote work options, some of our team members choose to work from their home offices from time to time, enabling us to reduce some of our office space (and therefore, our energy consumption), while reducing our emissions related to commuting (Scope 3 emissions).
  • In our offices, we’ve switched to LED lighting and installed energy-efficient appliances.
  • We promote energy-saving behaviours company wide. For example, turning off lights, reducing unnecessary equipment use and using laptops and monitors that automatically switch to energy-saving mode when not in use.
  • In all our daily operations, we’re prioritizing reusable options and integrating reusable items as much as possible.
  • We converted the heating system in one of our offices to an electric heat pump, further lowering direct energy use and emissions.
  • We’ve beefed up our office recycling, including a program for collecting and recycling coffee packaging.
  • We’ve switched to more sustainable vendors for our events and supplies and always prioritize reusable items in our offices.
  • We’ve cut our paper use significantly by going digital and minimizing printing for meetings and job fairs.
  • And more.

To stay accountable, we continuously monitor our progress against our stated commitments: achieving net-zero emissions across our Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant categories of Scope 3 emissions by 2050 or earlier. In terms of the detailed breakdown, here’s what we’re aiming for:

  • Our first interim target is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50%, and relevant Scope 3 emissions by 45%, by 2030.
  • Our second interim target is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85%, and relevant Scope 3 emissions by 75%, by 2040.

(Learn more about the different types of emissions in the government’s net-zero technical guide.)

As a human-centric organization, we care about people AND the planet and are always looking for ways to do better by both.

For Canada to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 will require collaboration and innovation across all areas of society, including the private sector. This work is essential for Canada to remain competitive in an increasingly low-carbon global economy, and we’re pleased to do our part!

We look forward to sharing more updates with you over the coming months.
